Dilhani studied at St Clare's girls school ,Colombo. She is married to singer and actor Priyankara Perera son of famous singer Milton Perera. She has a son aged 13.Sinhala film industry slumped in the face of stiff competition from Bollywood and resurgence of Tele Drama industry. Dilhani is one of the few who contributed immensely towards keeping Sinhala cinema afloat. Her early roles were confined to commercial films. Her ability to dance and her trade mark smile captivated the audiences. She is known as "SRI DEVI" of sri lanka, (Sri devi is a popular south Indian actress famed for her dancing). Her carrier hit a different trail with her role as an abandoned Tamil girl in the film "Me Mage Sandai" (This is my moon) by Ashoka Handagama. This serious role paved the way for other remarkable performances in "SUDU KALU SAHA ALU" (shades of Grey), "Mage wam atha" (my left Hand) and "Sulanga" (wind). She has also starred in several Tele Dramas of which "Maya Ranga" and "Meeduma" stand out. She plays a major role in the sri lankan movie star show "Ridee Reyak", which is a very popular annual event in sri lanka.

She was awarded with a Merit Award in 1980 for her role in `Aadara Geethaya’ directed by Amaranath Jayathilaka, Best Actress Award for H.D.Premaratne’s `Deveni Gamana’, the Presidential Award for the Up and Coming Actress in mid 1980s, Best Actress Awards for both `Sisila Gini Gani’ and `Podi Wije’. Sabeetha earned fame eminently in her career mainly for her enchanting acting in the Commercial films. But, Tissa Abeysekara’s `Viragaya’, Daya Wimalaweera’s `Sujatha’ and `Chaaya’ are among the films that proved her skills and talents in artistic acting which rewarded her with popular as well as critics’ awards. Apart from over hundred films she acted, Sabeetha won the Best Supporting Actress’ Award for the teledrama `Pitagamkarayo’ in the end of 1990s. In addition to them Sabeetha’s role in `Blending’, bilingual (English and Sinhala) film directed by Mohan Niyas and the two Tamil films, `Nanguram’ (Anchor) and `Isai Payanam’ (A musical Journey) are among the films that still live in the memory lane of film goers.
